Gal 4,21-31 (ASV)

21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

23 Howbeit the [son] by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the [son] by the freewoman [is born] through promise.

24 Which things contain an allegory: for these [women] are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

25 Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him [that was born] after the Spirit, so also it is now.

30 Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

31 Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

Does this passage in Gal 4 relate to those today who are Christians, those who believe in Christ today? If yes, in which way?

What or who is "the Jerusalem that now is? Is this "now" today's "now" or was it the "now" at the time of Paul's writing? What about "the Jerusalem that is above?

No one can be under the law as it was back then. The only way to belong to God is to come to Him through Jesus.

All people, Jew and Gentile are bound to the same place, condemnation, until they come to God through Jesus.

Romans 11:32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

John 3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

  • @YourTruthGod , and how do those verses in Rom 11:32 and John 3:18 relate to this thread about the text in Gal 4:21-31?

There is no more old covenant. No one can do the old covenant anymore. There is no more temple, no priests according to that of scripture, observing special days is now worthless, as well as the special diet, circumcision of the flesh is now mutilation of the flesh, and no one is offering animals, and if they did it would be wrong.

So then, the new covenant is now in effect, the Jerusalem from above has since come down to earth (cp. the record in Rev 21:2ff ) ?

No. You are confusing the times. It sounds a little like Preterism when you make it as if the New Jerusalem has come upon the New Earth.

Gal 4 speaks of the two covenants, compares them with two Jerusalems ... Are you inserting a third "Jerusalem" into the picture that is not in the text? Or has the old covenant actually not come to its end as you previously claimed? what "times"are you talking about?

The Jerusalem from above is still being built up with believers. At the end of the world we will have a new world and the New Jerusalem will come down from heaven to the New Earth.

Where is this building of new Jerusalem with believers being done ... in heaven? on earth?

Is this New Jerusalem that "Jerusalem which is above" in Gal 4?

The New Jerusalem in heaven is built up with ALL the saved.

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,

Revelation 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.
